Keep Going

There are very few people who follow my blog or who are even in my life who know the extent of the disaster my life was from about 2001 through 2009. I was in a destructive marriage with a man who was abusive, an alcoholic, had PTSD, and was just a difficult person to live with. A man who decided about two years into our marriage that he did not want children. I had distanced myself from some of my family and many of my friends. I held a job that I loved but yet found very stressful. For some of those years I was seventy-seven pounds heavier than I am now. I had a food addiction and low self-esteem. There were many times when I considered suicide and the threat was real enough that I was hospitalized several times for depression. For a period of time, I was even considered to have bipolar disorder and I was trialed on every class of psychiatric medications that existed. The diagnosis was later retracted by the same psychiatrist who diagnosed me and my mood issues were thought to be the beginning of my autoimmune disorder, coupled with significant environmental stressors. Then the physical symptoms of my autoimmune illness began.

2008-2009 found me very sick with Sjogren’s syndrome. I eventually ran out of sick time and FMLA and lost my job. On the day that my ex-husband threatened me and I thought he was going to be physically violent because he was so drunk, I told him we were done. I got divorced and lost my home. I lost one of my beloved dogs. No job, no home, no kids, no health, no marriage…no nothing.

But wait, I did have something. I had God. I had my family. I had a few friends.

I had myself.

So why am I even bothering to tell you all this six days before I marry my second husband? Because I want people to know. I want to tell anyone reading this who thinks that the only way out is through suicide that there is always a better way out. There is help out there. You can change your situation. The feeling of hopelessness you have now does not mean that things can not get better.

My upcoming marriage has stirred up a lot of emotions recently. Obviously that is due in part to the fact that I am marrying this incredible man who is my best friend and whom I love with all my heart. But the emotions are also there because over the past few weeks, I have stopped to think about where I am and how far I have come. Because at some point I stopped letting myself be a victim. I dealt with my depression and anxiety. I saw a therapist. I developed a positive attitude. An attitude that got me through some pretty dark days. I worked on my relationship with God and with myself. Step by step I made changes in my life that enabled me to be a whole person rather than the empty shell of one that I was during those years.

I still struggle with health issues. I still struggle at times with my self esteem. But at the end of the day I like the face of the person looking back at me in the mirror. Sometimes it is hard for me to think back on the past and even believe that was me. However I have to look back from time to time because those experiences have helped make me the courageous and determined individual I am today.

I am at peace.
I am happy.

So please don’t give up. You are worth more than the sum of your bad experiences. God has put you in this world for a reason. The reason may not be apparent to you now. It may never be apparent to you but I promise you, your presence in this world will make a difference to somebody.

Be strong.
Keep going.

From Abuse to the Promised Land

Did you ever work through some issue in your life and think that it was completely behind you until one day, it hits you in the face like a ton of bricks? That happened to me last weekend during my pastor’s sermon at church. I wasn’t expecting it. I was even the scripture reader for that day and it never dawned on me that his sermon based on that day’s scripture would bring me back in time; to a place that used to haunt me. A time that I have never written about privately, never mind publically. However in considering writing about this topic and posting it on the web, some glaring facts have became apparent to me.

It could help someone.
Make them feel less alone.
Give them hope.
And so here we are.

My pastor’s sermon this past Sunday was based on scripture from Exodus 14:10-14. In the sermon he discussed the relationship between Pharaoh and the people of Israel. These Jews, who were living in Egypt at the time, were being terrorized by Pharaoh who was the person ruling the land at the time. Not because they did anything wrong but because Pharaoh did not like working around Jewish holidays and practices. Pharaoh also heard a rumor about a new king being born to the Jews. And so began Pharaoh’s reign of terror. He controlled the Jews. He manipulated them. Moses intervenes and although things get worse initially, Moses finally tells the abused people of Israel:

“Do not be afraid. Be still.”

Then my pastor gets to the message of the sermon about people in violent and abusive relationships. He points out the similarities of Pharoah and the Jews to people in abusive relationships in the present day. About how the best approach to the “Pharaohs” in our lives is to be still, be at peace. It doesn’t mean to give in but to follow God’s lead in order to make it to the Promised Land. Why? Because as my pastor explained, it breaks the cycle of violence by not engaging our Pharaoh. He has no one left to control.

Oh crap.

I was sitting in my seat with the choir and all I wanted to do was run out of the church because I knew the sermon would make me cry and I didn’t want others to see that. I would cry with sadness and remembrance because I knew what it was like to have a Pharaoh. Cry with happiness because I knew I had finally made it to the Promised Land.

My Pharaoh was my ex-husband. I know that for certain now even though I didn’t always acknowledge it. Even when I did acknowledge this fact after I left him, there was still this small part of me that rationalized that I wasn’t in an abusive relationship. I couldn’t have been because I did my fair share of arguing and name calling when I was provoked by him. I was the one who was considered to be the control freak. As someone who feels strongly about taking responsibility for one’s own actions, I felt that even though my ex was usually the instigator, my own behavior was not always a model example, therefore he was not REALLY abusive. We just couldn’t get along.

Yeah right.

Something to be said for denial.

Emotional and mental abusive is often so insidious that it can be difficult to recognize and accept that you are in an abusive relationship. It can also be hard to one day wake up and realize that you let yourself become a victim. Not an easy thing when you thought all along you were the one in control. This type of abuse can take on so many forms that it can be almost impossible to recognize. When I looked back on my marriage, these are the incidents that made me realize that indeed there was abuse in my relationship. They are not an attempt to elicit sympathy but rather a means of showing how obscure abuse can sometimes be.

* Name calling towards me was a frequent occurrence.

* He was frequently badmouthing my family and friends. Every negative comment was an attempt to put more distance between me and them. He made it difficult for me to have people to our home.

* He often criticized my decisions no matter how small.

* He lied on a regular basis.

* He was a “gas lighter”. Gas lighting is a form of psychological abuse in which false information is presented to the victim with the intent of making them doubt their own memory and perception. Because I was starting to have some difficulties with my memory due to an autoimmune disease, it wasn’t too difficult to do. He would say we had conversations that I was sure we didn’t have.

* He did everything he could to bring down my self-esteem. When I went out of work on a medical disability, he told me I was lazy and that there was nothing wrong with me. He used comments to hurt me.

* He withheld affection from me.

* He did not support me. This may seem benign but men who yell at their sick wives and threaten to leave them alone in an emergency room because they don’t want to sit and wait for the doctor any longer would qualify as abuse to me.

I never saw the signs of my ex-husband potentially becoming an abusive partner. I wish I could sit here and tell you that when I looked back, I noticed this, this, and that. But I did not. I am sure there were signs, but I obviously missed them. I also cannot sit here and say there were not good times because there were. He presented his best side to me in the beginning of our relationship. I think he wanted to be the person that his best side showed. However he was plagued by a childhood that haunted him (maybe that was a potential red flag?) and his subsequent alcoholism that cropped up the year after we married consumed him.

So how did I save myself? After years of contemplating leaving, I got out. One night after a daylong drinking binge, two events occurred. The first was that I knew without a doubt that if I didn’t leave our house that night, he would hit me. I was keeping my distance from him and not engaging with him but he was relentless. It had never happened before but I knew this night was going to be different. I wasn’t going to give him that chance and I was no longer going to be a victim. We all have our breaking point and that was mine.

Apparently it was his too because after I left the house that evening, in an effort to manipulate the situation and get sympathy from my parents, he called my family and spoke with my mother. He told her that I had gone off the deep end and was threatening to kill myself. All completely untrue. Imagine having someone call you and tell you that your child is suicidal. Imagine the fear. I was never going to let him terrorize my family like that again. Ever.

At the end of the sermon last Sunday, I realized I truly was at the other side of the battle with my Pharaoh and into what my pastor described as the “Promised Land”. It required a lot of soul searching, therapy, and determination to leave and start over. It has meant forgiving and choosing to remember the good of that relationship without ignoring the bad. Getting to the Promised Land was not just about leaving, it was about rebuilding. It meant finding myself again and regaining my self-esteem before I entered another romantic relationship. It meant defining myself rather than letting someone else define me. Although I am in a very healthy romantic relationship now, being in this relationship is not all that defines the Promised Land for me. The Promised Land is a place where I am whole and at peace.
It is a place where I am not afraid.

Warning: Toxic!

Debbie Downer…Judgmental Jims…Disrespectful Dannys…Neverenough Nellies…Insincere Illissas…Dream Killing Keiths…Narcissistic Nancy…Manipulative Mary. These are the buzz words you find online now to describe what is otherwise known as toxic personalities. I am not going to go into a lengthy description of each because well, my readers are very capable of doing that on their own and besides, most of them are self-explanatory. For example, a description of person who is considered a “Narcissistic Nancy” is someone who feels that the world revolves around them. They cannot see outside themselves and make that fact pretty darn well known. The end result is that they leave you feeling pretty drained and wanting to run away screaming…as fast as you can!

Let’s face it. We all know someone who has a toxic personality so to speak. Most of us are even involved in some type of relationship with someone like that. It is a topic that I have been wanting to write about for some time but I am always hesitant. Why? Because first, I seem to struggle a lot lately with what kind of topics to blog on. I have so much that I want to write about, especially about relationships, but I walk a fine line between writing how/what I want and respecting people’s privacy. Also, I am not big on the idea of someone sitting there wondering if something I am discussing is about them because most likely it is not. However in order to be the type of writer I want to be, I have to write with honesty, emotion, and integrity.

Second, my hesitancy has been over the phrase “toxic people” because it tends to put people into little boxes or compartments and that is not how relationships work. They are messy and complicated. They are grey, rather than black and white.  I have found over the past several years that the more I put myself out there in the world, the more complicated developing and maintaining relationships becomes. People are so complex; in good ways and in bad. I am not talking only about relationships and toxic people (I will keep using that phrase just for an easy reference) in the romantic sense; but in the context of all our relationships whether they are with family members, co-workers, or friends.

During the time I separated and subsequently divorced from my ex-husband I pretty much figured well, that is that. All the emotional drama is going to go away. What I came to realize though is that I have a habit of developing toxic relationships of all forms. I think this is true for many of us. By saying this I don’t want to imply that I am somehow a blameless innocent victim because really, when a person is involved with another person that is considered toxic, we feed into it. We allow people with toxic personalities to have control over us when all we want to do is to tell them to stop draining the life out of us!
In my opinion, those with toxic personalities aren’t necessarily “bad” people. I think at one time or another, many of us have displayed the traits of a toxic personality like I mentioned above. Truth be told, I know I have. There have been times in my life that I have probably unintentionally drained the living hell out of certain people I am close to in my life. Maybe you can call it being needy; maybe you can call it being toxic. Maybe those people would say otherwise, who knows. I do know for a fact that looking back, I know a time when I might have been considered toxic to a very close friend of mine. She and I have been friends for about 10-11 years now and there were YEARS that she gave and gave to me, expecting nothing in return. I tried to be as good a friend to her as she was to me during those years but reality was, I couldn’t at the time. I don’t think it made me a bad person, just not a very good friend. She stuck with me though and I hope that now, I can do our friendship the justice that it so richly deserves.

Toxic relationships do not necessarily have to be overt such as with physical or verbal abuse. There is no clearly defined definition for a toxic person or relationship so I would like to offer up my own definition of a toxic person in one’s life. It is someone who drains you on a consistent basis; the key word here being consistent. We all go through difficult times when we need support and friends on a daily, if not hourly basis. Some people who are toxic though always take and rarely give. Others are possessive and behave in a passive-aggressive manner when you choose to spend time with someone else. Another example might be a friend saying something to embarrass you in front of a group of people, disguising it as a joke. Or someone who is constantly criticizing you or your choices. Yes, we are all responsible for how we let other people affect us with their words or behavior but to me, a toxic person is someone who on a regular basis just makes us feel bad. It’s that simple. I am not even sure that it matters whether you are an oversensitive person (like myself) or someone who tends to overanalyze things and not lightheartedly take a joke. If being around someone consistently makes you feel bad about yourself, them, or the world in general, you’ve got a problem on your hands.
So OK, what do you do about it then? Well, there are all kinds of philosophies about how to handle toxic people and relationships. Some people say just get the heck out of the relationship which sometimes may be necessary and sometimes not always possible. I am definitely not a shrink, but I say the best way to approach these types of relationships is to take control and own it. Inundate them with positivity when they are negative. Give the relationship some distance for a while. Talk to them; maybe they are not fully aware of their behavior and how it affects others. Confront the behavior directly in a calm and rational manner. Don’t feed into it especially when the behavior revolves around constant gossiping or complaining; negativity breeds negativity. Be the person to break the cycle. Be proactive in who you spend your time with to avoid getting yourself into a toxic relationship to begin with.

I can honestly say that the amount of toxicity in my life is the least it has been in a very very long time. This is not by chance. It requires a lot of work and thought. It has resulted in a lot of tears as well. I have had to reevaluate a lot of my interactions with those around me and just as importantly, my own behavior in order to develop and sustain all types of relationships that are nourishing, whole, and healthy. Because in the end, that is what we all deserve.
